Bible Study: Epistles

Amazon reader review: Newell is always good and whilst this commentary is not quite up to the Romans standard it is pretty close. Newell is conservative and dispensational. He handles each verse at a devotional / semi-technical level in the main body of the text. This would be enough to recommend the book. But he also drops down into some of the best technical footnotes you will come across. My favorite part though is his clear desire to inspire rather than simply inform. His section on Heb 1:1-3 and his description of communicating IN SON has inspired me and many others (that I have shared it with) more that enough to justify the entry price alone.

Amazon reader review: There can be few
books on Romans comparable to this. Each time I read it, I get blessed.
Newell provides tremendous insight into the book of Romans. He has an
excellent understanding of what happened at the cross, the substitution
work and the new resurrection life. For a foundational knowledge of the
new life, of righteousness, Romans must be understood thoroughly. Don't
miss this book!!

Writing in an approachable and anecdotal style, Tom Wright helps us see the great sweep of this letter. Romans has long been viewed as the book above all in which Paul spells out the basic doctrines of the faith, and the picture of God's life for us. These helpful guides provide Wright's own translation of the letter as well as explanations, suggestions, and thoughts for how the biblical text can be relevant to our lives today. Easy to read and great for all sorts of settings and all sorts of readers-- Bible groups, personal devotions, young or old, clergy or layperson...for everyone!

Amazon reader review: Tom Wright (the more informal way N. T. Wright addresses himself in his more popular and accessible material) has shown his brilliance once again. He says more in 2 - 3 pages about a major section of Paul's letters than many commentaries say by using dozens of pages. This series is meant to be simple and accessible to the average layman, and yet, because of the author, the insights are profoundly brilliant. I can't think of a better series to use for devotions. Buy any of these -- you will not be disappointed.

Amazon reader review: This is the book that brought an end to 19th century liberal theology's attempt to produce a neat synthesis of Christianity and culture, a psychological Christianity or an anthropologized Christianity. The project was a failure, and Barth tells us why and what should replace it -- a religionless Christianity? Not really a Biblical commentary. If you're looking for an exposition of the text, this isn't what you want. It's more like a manifesto, using Paul's epistle to the Romans as a place to begin the attack on cultural, non-prophetic Christianity. Written in a dialectical, highly expressive style. If you like Kierkegaard and Nietzsche, this is your kind of theologizing -- with a hammer. It can be exhausting, and you will either love it or hate it. Barth later changed his style and tone, but not his message.
